Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

General Summary/Purpose

 

The Research & Evaluation Officer designs and implements research and evaluation activities for socio-behavioral change and health communication programs, with support from higher-level R&E staff.  He/She works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams in Baltimore and with staff in CCP field offices to apply theories of communication and behavior change to program strategies, to promote normative change and achieve improvements in public health.  The Research & Evaluation Officer, with guidance from higher-level R&E staff, develops innovative research approaches and conducts state-of-the-art qualitative and quantitative research and statistical analysis, to meet the needs of donor-funded projects and coordinates the work, and builds the capacity of staff and in-country partners in effective evaluation approaches for communication programs.  The Research & Evaluation Officer, with support from higher-level R&E staff, represents CCP at national and international forums, develops and participates in data use and results sharing activities, and contributes to the development of health communication science through publications, professional meetings and technical reports. With guidance from higher-level R&E staff the Research and Evaluation Officer, also assists in the preparation of grant proposals.  He/She will also travel internationally to provide STTA for research activities, with some support from higher-level R&E staff.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

 

I.  Theory, Frameworks & Models

  • Demonstrates solid knowledge of public health, communication, sociological, anthropological and/or social psychological theories.
  • Applies SBCC theory and models to RMEL studies, independently.
     
    II. Research & Evaluation
    Research Design
  • Conceptualizes R&E study designs and IRB protocols w/Support
  • Leads the implementation of R&E studies and IRB protocols w/Support
  • Supervises the implementation of R&E studies and data quality w/Support

 

Tools Development

  • Conceptualizes and develops RMEL quantitative and qualitative data collection tools w/Support
  • Develops mobile and electronic data collection tools, independently

 

Field Work

  • Develops RFP for R&E data collection and reviews competitive proposals, independently
  • Develops and implements field training, independently
  • Manages and supervises R&E data collection and quality assurance in the field per approved IRB protocol w/Support

 

Dissemination

  • Contributes and/or leads the development of R&E reports and manuscripts (includes scientific writing) presentations, posters, blogs and other products, using writing that is accurate, clear with logical flow, and appropriate for different audiences, w/Support
  • Develops data visualization resources for reports and other products w/Support
  • Presents research findings at external and internal meetings and conferences w/Support

 

III. Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL)

MEL Design

  • Identify needs for MEL activities that fit the larger R&E program agenda w/Support

 

MEL Data Analysis

  • Oversees final MEL plans and data analysis and interpretation w/Support

 

IV. Statistics and Analysis

Quantitative Analysis

  • Develops R&E analysis plans per research goals w/Support
  • Conducts and/or coordinates R&E data cleaning and data preparation for analysis w/Support
  • Performs quantitative analysis using statistical software (STATA, SPSS, R, SAS) and interpretation, independently

 

Qualitative Analysis

  • Develops R&E analysis plans per research goals, independently
  • Conducts and/or supervises R&E data preparation and codebook development for analysis w/Support
  • Conducts qualitative analysis using software (Atals.ti. Nvivo, Deddose and others) and interpretation, independently

 

V.  Business Development

  • Contribute to proposal development (includes suggesting original ideas for theory, MEL, research and PMP) w/Support

 

VI. Leadership and Professional Development

  • Participates in and contributes to internal CCP, R&E and MEL technical groups that includes diverse communication and public health project areas.
  • Contributes ideas and participates in CCP's stakeholders and partners' meetings w/Support
  • Manages working groups, independently

 

VII. Collaboration and Communication

  • Seeks input from team members (in country, HQ) to develop comprehensive R&E plans and documents w/Support
  • Contributes to open dialogue and candid discussions that motivates and fosters the growth of the team.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Required)

Master’s Degree (MPH, MSPH, MS) in communication, public health, or related behavioral science with six (6) years of relevant experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral Degree (PhD, DrPH, ScD) in communication, public health, or related behavioral science with at least three (3) years of relevant experience. At least 2 years are relevant international-experience.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
