Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Population and Family Planning - Principles and Guidelines for Action by the European Union

2 Basic Principles for Action

  1. Everyone has the right to decide freely the number of children he or she wants and when. Aid should not be granted to programmes of a coercive or discriminatory nature or which undermine people's fundamental rights.
  2. Family planning is a fundamental social service; men and women are entitled to the most complete and scientifically accurate information on reproduction, the spacing of births and contraception and free access to all ways and means of spacing or limiting births.

4 Priority Objectives

  1. to allow women and men to exercise their right to choose freely and responsibly the number of their children and the spacing of births
  2. to contribute to creating an environment more conducive to full exercise of this choice, in particular as a result of increased access to good quality family planning services
  3. to reduce substantially risks to women and children's health by providing competent reproductive health services
  4. to enable countries and local communities to respond to and influence population growth and movement.
