Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Trainer's Manual and Trainee's Manual
SummaryText

"You are young! You're moving into adulthood. Your role in society is changing and you have new economic and financial responsibilities!"

This training package aims to assist Nepalese organisations reaching out to teach youth basic knowledge and management skills in finance such as financial decision making, earning, and spending wisely through budgeting and using financial services. Developed by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the training package is meant to build the financial capability of young Nepali women and men aged 18-29 for better opportunities in life and at work. The overall aims of the training package are to:

  • Prepare young people for their financial responsibilities in life, providing them with the knowledge and skills to ensure a successful transition from economic dependence to independence.
  • Strengthen young people's behaviours that lead to increased saving, more productive and responsible spending, and borrowing for sound reasons.

The training package consists of two parts: (i) a trainer's manual, intended for trainers from financial institutions, business development service providers, youth associations, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs); and (ii) a trainee's guide, intended for the youth.

With a focus on achieving sustained behaviour change, the trainer's manual contains 2 parts:

  • Part I: Introduction and training preparation - introduces the manual, explains and gives tips for the participatory training methodology, and gives guidance on the design and implementation of training. It helps the trainers prepare for the training, carry out an evaluation, and write a training report at the end of the workshop.
  • Part II consists of 11 learning sessions, which are very active - engaging participants in games and exercises. Each module provides the trainers with a step-by-step session guide on how to conduct the training, setting out the learning objectives, the exercises, key content, and the main learning points. Strategic communication tips are provided for trainers; for example: "High levels of trainees' participation and interactive learning in a two-way communication process between trainers and trainees and amongst students promote effective learning. Trainers are not only teachers but also facilitators of trainees' learning and trainees take more responsibility for their own learning." Training aids are included at the end of every session.

In addition, the key messages of the trainers' manual are included in the trainee's guide. This short guide, designed to be used directly by young people, provides essential information and knowledge about money, money management, and employment options.
