The Communication Initiative

After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. 

Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future. 

On the transfer, co-founder Victoria Martin expressed her pleasure to see this work continue under Wits' leadership, knowing that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction. 

As Wits, we honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades and look forward building from that strong base. This includes co-founders Warren Feek (1953-2024) and Victoria Martin as well as La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA), which continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com with links to The CI Global site. We are also eager to forge new partnerships and entertain new ideas as we consider how best to contribute to social and behaviour change in our rapidly evolving environment.

If you are joining the International Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) Summit in Panama, please join Wits and CILA on Monday, 22 June, to share your thoughts and suggestion for the relaunch of the Communication Initiative. We will be in Pacifica 5 from 12-1:25 for the Refuel, Reflect, and Renew Lunch Series: The Communication Initiative: celebrating a driving force for Communication for Social Change and the way forward. We will reflect on the legacy of Warren Feek and family in creating the Communication Initiative, consider the contributions of CI over the years and then turn our attention towards the future in this dynamic session.

El portal Esperanza es fruto de la creación conjunta entre el Departamento de Enfoques Diferenciales y la Subdirección de Comunicaciones de la JEP. Su objetivo es servir como una herramienta pedagógica que permita acceder al derecho a la información pública, ampliar las historias que se conocen sobre el conflicto armado y abordarlas desde una perspectiva diferencial en la que puedan encontrar información sobre la institución, las actividades que les involucran y cómo pueden hacer parte del proceso. El micrositio está dirigido a niños, niñas y adolescentes y da cumplimiento a lo establecido por el numeral 2.4.2 del anexo 2 de la Resolución 1519 de MinTic de 2020.​

Esperanza es una niña de 10 años que nació en el campo, pero creció en la ciudad. Un día, vio una fotografía en la que ella estaba en brazos de su mamá. Su familia sonreía y en el fondo se veía una casa en el campo, con árboles y animales. Esperanza empezó a preguntarse muchas cosas alrededor de la fotografía y buscó en su abuela un relato desde el que pudiera conocer su historia familiar. Tras las preguntas de Esperanza, su abuela empezó a contarle su pasado, marcado por la historia de desplazamiento por la violencia armada que llegó hasta el pueblo donde vivían.

Con este sencillo relato la JEP brinda una oportunidad para que los niños, niñas y adolescentes conozcan a través de Esperanza la forma en que millones de personas han tenido que sobrellevar el conflicto armado.  Igualmente, busca hacerles partícipes de la construcción de un futuro con más garantías para las nuevas generaciones

 Esperanza cuenta con otras herramientas pedagógicas como una selección de videos educativos, un glosario de palabras clave y actividades. Con esta herramienta, la JEP quiere impulsar nuevas conversaciones en los hogares y colegios de todo el país para promover la idea de que la construcción de paz también se alcanza con su participación.
