Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This encyclopaedia is an online tool that provides access to recent scientific studies on early childhood. Together, the Centro de Excelencia para el Desarrollo de la Primera Infancia (CEDPI - the Centre for Excellence in Early Childhood Development) and the Red Estratégica de Conocimientos sobre el Desarrollo de la Primera Infancia (REC-DPI - Strategic Knowledge Network on Early Childhood Development) produce the encyclopaedia, which is directed at politicians, planners, service providers, and parents.

It offers users multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary information about themes for understanding the complex nature of early childhood development. The articles are written by early childhood experts and deal primarily with children's development from pregnancy to five years of age. They are written from three different perspectives: development, services, and policies. For each issue, a synthesis is provided in a simple format that highlights key points to professionals and planners. Categories are as follows:

  • According to the experts: For each issue, a series of articles written by international experts presenting scientific studies.
  •  Synthesis: For each issue there is a synthesis that responds to the questions:
    • Why is it important?
    • What do we know?
    •  What can we do?
  • Complete documentation: All of the articles on a particular subject and the respective synthesis have been grouped in one document so they can be downloaded.
  • Perspectives: Service professionals and planners in Latin America and Spain provide their perspectives.
  • Key messages: Information is summarised on each subject and then presented in a format geared to parents and service providers.
