Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

David Kato Vision and Voice Award 2014

The Secretariat of the David Kato Vision and Voice Award (DKVVA) is seeking nominations for an inspirational individual who demonstrates courage and outstanding leadership in advocating for the sexual rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people. David Kato was a Ugandan human rights activist who was murdered in his Kampala home in 2011. In the same year, to honour David's legacy, the David Kato Vision and Voice Award was launched to recognise those who are working to eliminate violence, stigma, and discrimination towards LGBTI people. The award will be accompanied by a one-time grant of $10,000.

Nominees will be assessed according to the following five key criteria:

  • Proven leadership in promoting the sexual rights of LGBTI people
  • Evidence of commitment to issue
  • Demonstrated courage in overcoming obstacles
  • Ability to inspire and be an example to others; and
  • Pioneering approach to work

Application Info

Nominations for the award are accepted for any individual whose leadership and life work has directly contributed to addressing the sexual rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people in their community. An individual can be self nominated or be nominated by an individual or organisation familiar with the nominee's work.
